Apart from selling electric bike kits, I do quite a bit
of design and build. I have sourced a range of parts that
I have tested and use in my own developments, so I have
put together the following catalogue that will help you.
Bull Electrical (www.bullnet.co.uk)
has a huge range of bits and pieces, as well. I particularly
like their Fly Zapper - the best fun you can have with a
pair of double A's (well, nearly)!!!
Batteries: the 'workhorse' batteries are
still sealed lead-acid (SLA) despite their weight. They
(and their chargers) are a lot cheaper than NiCd or NiMh.
NiCd's however are gaining ground - being lighter than SLA
and with better voltage/time characteristics. Despite their
memory-effect, they are still preferred for electric bikes
over NiMh. I am watching the LiIon market: 10 A/hr cells
are available, but at £12/cell they are still pricey
and their long-term performance yet to be proved. For further

Chargers: SLA chargers are constant-voltage,
while NiCd (and NiMh) are constant-current. They monitor
the charge current/output voltage and indicate when charging
is complete. Laptop computer technology

Connectors: Probably the least reliable
part of an electric bike are the connectors. Water and electrics
don't mix and 'weatherproof' connecors are large and difficult
the plug/unplug frequently. I have chosen some connectors
that don't need expensive crimping tools.

Cable: The range of cable needed is fairly
small and for higher currents domestic stranded cable is
usually OK. Heatshrink tube is invaluable for weatherproofing
and making a tidy job. If you build model aircraft, you
will already have a heat gun. Use a paint-stripping gun
with care!

Switches: I generally use toggle switches
for the power switch for my kits - they have a good rating
and can be weatherproofed with a simple rubber cover

Lighting: With all that power on board,
it seems crazy to use low wattage torch bulbs to see and
be seen - the typical cycle light dissipates just 0.7 W,
so even a 5W halogen lamp is a major improvement. NB These
are not BSI approved so must not be used as a sole lighting
system. Also they have a 18 degree solid angle beam, so
they must be mounted so they don't dazzle drivers. The B-Seen101
however uses the same lamps and is BSI approved when installed
as described.
